Breast pain - Generics

Breast pain, also known as mastalgia, is a common symptom experienced by many women. Breast pain can range from mild discomfort to severe pain, and it may occur in one or both breasts. There are two types of breast pain: cyclical and non-cyclical.

Cyclical breast pain is the most common type of breast pain and is associated with the menstrual cycle. This type of pain typically occurs in the days leading up to a woman's period and may continue for a few days after her period has ended. Cyclical breast pain is thought to be caused by hormonal changes that occur during the menstrual cycle.

Non-cyclical breast pain is not associated with the menstrual cycle and can occur at any time. This type of pain may be caused by injury, inflammation, or a benign breast condition, such as fibrocystic breast changes.

Symptoms of breast pain may include:

  1. A dull ache or sharp stabbing pain in one or both breasts.
  2. Pain that is localized to one area of the breast.
  3. Pain that is accompanied by swelling or tenderness.
  4. Pain that is worsened by physical activity or pressure on the breasts.
  5. Pain that is relieved by over-the-counter pain relievers or a warm compress.

Breast pain is rarely a sign of breast cancer, but women who experience persistent or severe breast pain should see a healthcare provider to rule out any underlying medical conditions. A healthcare provider may perform a physical exam and imaging tests, such as a mammogram or ultrasound, to diagnose the cause of breast pain.

Treatment for breast pain depends on the underlying cause. For cyclical breast pain, over-the-counter pain relievers or hormonal treatments, such as birth control pills, may be recommended. Non-cyclical breast pain may be treated with pain relievers, antibiotics, or surgery to remove any benign breast lumps or cysts. In some cases, lifestyle changes, such as wearing a well-fitting bra or reducing caffeine intake, may help to relieve breast pain.
