Freckles - Generics

Freckles are small, flat, and tan or light brown spots that appear on the skin, especially on the face, arms, and shoulders. They are most commonly seen in individuals with fair skin, and they can be inherited genetically.

Freckles are caused by an increase in the production of melanin, which is the pigment that gives color to the skin. When exposed to sunlight, the skin produces more melanin to protect itself from the harmful effects of UV radiation. In individuals with a genetic predisposition to freckles, the excess melanin production results in the formation of freckles.

Freckles are generally harmless and do not require treatment. However, individuals with freckles should take extra precautions to protect their skin from the sun, as excessive sun exposure can increase the risk of skin damage and skin cancer. Sunscreen, protective clothing, and avoiding sun exposure during peak hours can help reduce the risk of sun damage.

In some cases, freckles may be mistaken for other skin conditions, such as lentigines or moles, which may require medical attention. If a freckle changes in size, shape, or color, or if it bleeds or itches, it is important to have it examined by a dermatologist to rule out any underlying skin conditions.
