Transfusion reactions - Generics

Transfusion reactions are adverse reactions that can occur during or after a blood transfusion. These reactions can range from mild to life-threatening and can be caused by a variety of factors, including mismatched blood types, transfusion of contaminated blood, or an allergic reaction to the blood components.

There are several types of transfusion reactions, including:

  1. Acute hemolytic reaction: This is the most serious type of transfusion reaction and occurs when the patient's immune system attacks and destroys the transfused red blood cells. Symptoms can include fever, chills, back pain, chest pain, shortness of breath, and kidney failure.
  2. Febrile non-hemolytic reaction: This is a common transfusion reaction that occurs when the patient's immune system reacts to white blood cells in the transfused blood. Symptoms can include fever, chills, and headache.
  3. Allergic reaction: This can occur when the patient has an allergy to one of the components of the transfused blood, such as plasma or platelets. Symptoms can include itching, hives, and difficulty breathing.
  4. Transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI): This is a rare but serious reaction that can occur when transfused blood triggers an immune response that causes inflammation in the lungs. Symptoms can include shortness of breath and low oxygen levels.
  5. Delayed hemolytic reaction: This is a delayed reaction that occurs when the patient's immune system attacks the transfused red blood cells several days after the transfusion. Symptoms can include fever, anemia, and jaundice.

Treatment for transfusion reactions will depend on the type and severity of the reaction. Mild reactions may only require supportive care, such as fever-reducing medication or antihistamines, while more severe reactions may require immediate medical attention, such as oxygen therapy or blood transfusion reversal. If you experience any symptoms during or after a blood transfusion, it is important to notify your healthcare provider immediately so that appropriate action can be taken.
